Corporate salesman, Steve Butler is dispatched to the rural, run down US town of McKinley with his sales partner Sue, in order to buy drilling rights for the gas company they represent. However, what seems like an easy job hits two major stumbling blocks in the form of well respected school teacher Frank Yates who opposes the gas company's plans and Steve's romantic encounter with a local, Alice.
